Margaret E. Nepstad
(February 21, 1913 - November 18, 2009)

Margaret E. Nepstad, age 96, of Lake Mills, died Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Margaret Elizabeth (Infelt) Nepstad was born February 21, 1913 in Virginia, Minnesota, daughter of Orie and Florence (Durand) Infelt. She attended school in Thornton, Iowa, and graduated from Thornton High School in 1930.

In 1931, she married Henry Karl, a classmate from Thornton, and they farmed near Thornton for 13 years. Margaret moved to Lake Mills in 1943 to manage her brothers’ store, “Infelts Variety Store”, while her brothers served in the United States Navy during World War II. Margaret later purchased the store from her brothers, owning and operating it for the next 50 years. During that same period of time, she also owned and operated “Margaret’s Style Shop” for 25 years.

On August 20, 1952, Margaret was married to George Nepstad in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple ran their businesses in Lake Mills, including “Infelts Floor Covering” until George retired in 1970, selling the business to his son, John. In Margaret’s 50 years of business, she served three generations of customers retiring in 1993, and closing the store.

Margaret enjoyed meeting her customers at the store and missed their friendships after retirement. “It’s the people I missed,” she said. Margaret served on different retail and planning committees and helped organize activities for special events in Lake Mills. She loved to play bridge, belonging to her club for 40 years, as well as a knitting club she was a member of for 40 years.

She was active at Salem Lutheran Church with circle, and was the church organist, providing music for two services every Sunday for 35 years. At her retirement, the pastors said Margaret played for over 800 funerals and 200 weddings during that time.

Survivors include her two children, Norman (Marti) Karl of Overland Park, KS, and John (fiancée Lori) Nepstad of Clear Lake, IA; a son-in-law, Dr. Donald Rollins of Denver, CO; grandchildren, Terry (Nigel) Karl of Shawnee, KS, Kelly (Micah) Karl of Manhattan, KS, Matt (Kriss) Nepstad of Plymouth, MN, and Elizabeth Rollins of Denver, CO; Matt Rollins of TX; five great grandchildren, Wyatt, Tyson, Ryder, Drew, and Luke; and other relatives and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George in 1992; daughter, Susan; and two brothers, Fred and George.

Funeral service will be 1:30 PM, Friday, November 20, 2009, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, IA, with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Burial will take place at Salem Memorial Cemetery, Lake Mills, IA.

The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa.
