Alma Mitchell
(November 26, 1915 - December 27, 2009)

Alma Mitchell, age 94, of Buffalo Center, IA, died on Sunday December 27, 2009, at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center, IA.

Alma Mitchell was born to Herman Johann and Gebke (Gayken) Helm on November 26, 1915 on a farm northeast of Woden. She was the twelfth of thirteen children.

Alma married Raymond Earl Mitchell June 21st, 1934, in Brooklyn, Iowa. They adopted Alma's nieces’ daughter, Dona Rae while in Brooklyn. Ray was a buttermaker and Alma often helped him at the creameries in Woden, Osage, Clear Lake, Sheffield and Buffalo Center. Ray and Alma also owned the Ben Franklin in Buffalo Center.

Quilting was one of Alma's many talents, and she made lots of quilts for family members. She was also a good seamstress, and she made many of her daughter's and granddaughters' clothes. She also liked to crochet, knit, garden, paint with oils, make ceramics, and play cards. Alma was a good cook and shared her baked goods with many.

Alma entered Timely Mission Nursing Home in April 2002 and passed peacefully away there on Sunday, December 27, 2009.

She is survived by her daughter: Dona Yegge and her husband Dave of Algona, IA; five grandchildren: Denise Tataryn and husband Andy of Plymouth, MN; Pam Matheson and husband Greg of Ringsted, IA; Kim Bailey and husband Steve of Clive, IA; Kristi Hawthorne of West Des Moines, IA; and Scott Yegge and wife Angie of Ankeny, IA; eleven great-grandchildren: Taras and Aleksa Tataryn; Chris, Kyle, and Kelly (Tricia) Matheson; Joshua and Alyssa Bailey; Bryanna and Gunner Hawthorne; and Mason and Morgan Yegge; two great-great-grandchildren: Ava and Conner Matheson; sister-in-law Charlene Mitchell; and brother-in-law Wallace B. Mitchell; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Raymond; and her 12 brothers and sisters: Jacob, George, Willie, Louie, Elvin, Margaret, Katherine, Martha, Amanda, Minnie, Marie, and Letha.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 PM Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Shannon Pascual. Burial will be at Olena Mound Cemetery in Buffalo Center.

Visitation was Tuesday from 5 to 8 PM at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. NW, Buffalo Center and 1 hour before the service on Wednesday at the church.
