Independent Newspaper Obituary, Forest City, Iowa dated Sep 1, 1898

The death and burial of Andrew Bayers occurred last Sunday. While it is always a sad thing at any time to inform our readers of the death of one of the community, still our sympathies are more or less governed by the circumstances surrounding the death. Andrew Bayers, who is the second son of N. P. Bayers of Ellington, was a young man seventeen years old and has been working on the farm of Andrew Thurston four miles northwest of town this summer, and it was there that the dread disease diphtheria laid holt of him, about a month ago, and resulted in death claiming him as its victim about three o'clock Sunday morning. During the time of his sickness a strick quarantine has been kept and the care and comfort that only a kind mother can give was constantly his. For three weeks she has laid aside her household duties and comforts of her home, and family to administer to the higher duty that all true mothers feel called open to perform to stay by the bedside to the last with the afflicted son giving cheer and comfort to make peaceful the last hours. Imagine the anxiety at home of the father, brothers, and sisters as each remaining day brought news for the better or worse as the case might be, and the shock that the last summons brought, when they realized that although they were permitted to follow his body to the grave, they would never to look upon his face again.

The family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement. None of the Thurston family at present writing seem afflicted with the disease and it is hoped the worst is over with.

Parents: Nel P. and Bertha M (Andersen) Bayers
