FOREST CITY - Irene Strommen, 66, of Forest City, died Friday (April 20, 2001) at St Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Michelle Simonson officiating. Burial will be held in the Brush Point Cemetery in Fertile.

Visitation will be held today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour before the service at the church. There will be a prayer service today at 7:15 p.m. at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St., Forest City.

Irene Lorraine Strommen was born in rural Rockwell on April 28, 1934, the daughter of Arthur C. and Catherine (Ytzen) Humburg. She was baptized into the Christian faith on May 21, 1934, at St. Peters Lutheran Church in Rockwell. She grew up in this and surrounding areas, going to country school. She was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake on May 16, 1948, and attended high school in Ventura.

On Aug. 20, 1951, she married Kenneth Strommen at the Bethlehem Lutheran Parsonage in Mason City. The couple made their home in rural Forest City, farming with Kenneth's parents, Ben and Emma Strommen. In 1966 they moved to Forest City and both were employed at Winnebago Industries. In 1968 they adopted two children, Kathy and David. In 1973 Irene began a 23-year career at North Central Human Services in Forest City. She dedicated much to this job and always felt it an important work. After leaving NCHS she was employed for a few years as cook at the Family Life Center operated by Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City. She enjoyed being surrogate grandma to many children.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City and the American Legion in Forest City.

She is survived by her children, Kathy and husband, Thomas Montgomery, of Forest City and David and wife, Anita, of rural Wymore, Neb.; five grandchildren, Katy, Adam and Andrew Montgomery and William and Benjamin Strommen; a sister, Shirley and husband, Calvin Wendel, of Mason City; and three brothers, Donald Humburg, Kenneth Humburg and wife, Ruby, and Raymond Humburg and wife, Gloria, all of Clear Lake; a sister-in-law, Arlene Humberg, of Clear Lake; an aunt, Esther Humburg, of Sheffield; and an uncle, Edward Humburg and wife, Beulah, of Hampton. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and a close friend, Rosemary Rienecke.

Irene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth, in 1988; two brothers, Dale Humburg in infancy and Carl Humberg of Clear Lake.
