Jacob Grimstead, Lake Mills grocer, has announced his candidacy on the Republican ticket for state senator in the 41st district, comprised of Worth, Winnebago and Mitchell counties.

When Mr. Grimstead first came to this country from Norway, he worked for some time on farms and also for a construction company in the vicinity of Fargo, North Dakota. Later he was employed in the Buick factory in Flint, Michigan. He came to Lake Mills community in 1930, where he worked for a while as a farm hand. For the last 12 years he has been in business for himself, having operated a grocery store in Joice for one year, and for the past 11 years in Lake Mills. He also operates a 200 acre farm in Worth county.

Since coming to Lake Mills, Mr. Grimstead has been active in civic and church affairs and at the present time is serving as a member of the town council. He is president of the Lions club and also serves as chairman of the Resolutions committee of the Winnebago County Farm Bureau of which he is a member. Mr. Grimstead has a wide acquaintance throughout the district, having appeared as a speaker at many public gatherings, and also having been heard over radio station KGLO several times and from the Fort Dodge station.

He attended Olso university in Norway and Hamilton business college in Mason City. Mr. Grimstead states that he is seeking the office entirely on his own initiative without being sponsored by any groups or individuals.

Mr. Grimstead is married to the former Ruth Henderson, daughter of the late Ed Henderson, a pioneer merchant of Lake Mills, and a brother of the late John Henderson of Northwood. The Grimsteads have two daughters, Judith, 8 years old and Elise, 6 years old.

~Notes:
1) Grimstead was defeated by Leo Elthon in the June 1944 primary election. He again ran for Senate in 1952 and won the seat in the November 1952 election. Grimstead served in the Senate until he lost the seat in the November 1964 election.
2) Jacob 1905-1993 and Ruth 1900-1973, are buried in Sunnyside Cemetery, Lake Mills, Center twp.
