I dont know if this will be of help but there were Powells in Washington Township before 1900. Washington Twp is just SE of Ft. Dodge City. My Ggrandfather bought 160 acres of land from a Powell in section 19 of Washington Twp in 1901. Also I met a Powell researcher casually when at the Ft. Dodge Library a couple of years ago. She lived near Kansas City MO, I believe. I am assuming you are looking at a later time period as you have the car accident as a fact. At least one branch of Powell was in the area before 1900. I have no idea if it is your branch but thought I would write nonetheless.
