Lenore Swanson Cole, 86 of Sioux City died Friday, November 21, 2003 at Bickford Cottage in Sioux City. Services were held Sunday, November 23, at 4:30 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Del Oliver of Augustana Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation was from 1-5 p.m. on that same day. In accordance with her wishes, her body was donated to the University of Iowa College of Medicine. A memorial service was held Saturday, December 6, 2003 at 4:30 p.m. at the Augustana Lutheran Chapel in Sioux City.
Lenore Swanson Cole was born September 6, 1917 in Harcourt, Iowa, the daughter of Oscar and Edith (Gustafson) Swanson. She attended school in Harcourt and went on to receive a degree in education from the Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
She taught elementary education at the Price Laboratory School in Cedar Falls and at Odebolt, Iowa. She moved to Iowa City in 1948 and taught at Emerson Elementary School and completed her teaching career at Hunt Elementary School, where she retired in 1981.
She married George A. Cole, former mayor and councilman of Sioux City on July 3, 1970. Mr. Cole passed away on May 10, 2002.
She was a memeber of the Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, and the Sioux City Retired Teacher's Association. She was a member of the Harcourt United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a step-daughter and her husband, Victoria A. and Frank Plambeck of Mesa, Arizona; a step-son, Stephen L. Cole of Mound, Minnesota; a daughter-in-law, Jane Cole of Wayzata, Minnesota; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Arline Johnson of Harcourt; nieces Mrs. James (Beverly) Greenfield of Denver, Colorado, Shirley Gustafson of Harcourt, Iowa, Mrs. Tom (Mary Jane) Martin of Orlando, Florida, and a nephew and wife, Ken and Sue Johnson of Harcourt; and a very special close personal friend who cared for her the past two years of her life, Phyllis Van Meter from Home Instead.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Merle Swanson of Omaha, Nebraska.
George and Lenore Cole enjoyed many years of traveling together throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, and Hawaii.
At the end of her life, Lenore enjoyed living at Bickford Cottage in the loving care of her newfound friends on its staff as well as all the wonderful people of Home Instead.
