Herbert Joseph Buell Jr., 86, died Saturday, April 19, 2003 at Crestview Manor, Webster City, IA. His body was donated to the Mayo Foundation. A memorial service was held at the First Congregational Church in Webster City, IA on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

Herbert was the son of Herbert Joseph Buell Sr. and Mary Rood Buell, born in Webster City, IA, on August 8, 1916. He attended school in Webster City, graduated from the Webster City high school, and received his engineering degree from Iowa State College in 1939. He became manager of the Star Laundry and Dry Cleaning Co. in 1939.

In December of 1942, he enlisted in the US Navy, serving until 1946 as a lieutenant on the destroyer U.S.S. Case DD370 in the South Pacific.

After WWll, he returned to Webster City and continued with his former job until 1952 when he purchased the Oldsmobile dealership. As years passed, he added Studebaker and Chevrolet franchises and an auto leasing operation. He sold the business in 1964 and became a wholesale tire distributor. In 1969, he became a licensed real estate broker. After 1982, he devoted his time to appraisals and retired in 1996, at the age of 80.

He married Bethel Pollock of Garner, IA on June 4, 1947. They have one daughter. He served as President of various organizations in Webster City and was a member of the First Congregational Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister and a grandson, Nathan Ray Reasland. Survived by wife, Bethel (Polly); daughter and grandsons.
