“Oliver Hale, Smith, 91, of Kenosha, died July 19, 2000, at his home.

The son of the late Emery Elwood and Lulubel (Hale) Smith, he was born on Feb. 28, 1909, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

He attended local schools and graduated from Fort Dodge High School.

Later, he attended Iowa University, graduating in 1943, and also attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University while serving in the military.

During World War II, he served with the U. S. Army in the European Theater. After the war, he was assigned to the Reserve Officer Training Corps, stationed primarily at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. He retired from ROTC in the 1960s and from the Army as a major in the 1970s.

He was a charter member of Bradford Community Church-Unitarian Universalist, National Rifle Association, Retired Commissioned Officers Association, Sierra Club and other conservation organizations and events.

He enjoyed dancing, historical and Biblical research, and his association with the Jeepsters.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Rosemary Cogen of Lubbock, Texas, and several nephews and nieces.

Bruch Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.”

Interment at Fort Dodge Memorial Park.
