"A Tribute to the Memory of the Lamented John Crosby. Died, in Ft.Dodge, Iowa, January 24, 1899,
of paralysis, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. N.L. Albee, Mr. John Crosby, aged 73 years, 9 months and 13 days.
John Crosby was born in Pennsylvania, April 11, 1825, died January 24, 1899. At an early age he removed with his parents to Perry county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. Afterword, he removed to Rehoboth, Licking County, Ohio, where he was married to Miss Martha Adamson, who now survives him. This union was blessed with seven children, five of whom three sons and two daughters,
still live. They are: Henry, James, and Alonzo, Mrs. John Crouse, and Mrs. N.L.Albee.
In 1856, he emigrated to Iowa, taking up his residence in Clinton County, where he lived until the outbreak of the civil war. In 1862, he enlisted in the 24th Iowa Vol. Infantry and served three years. He participated in the
famous Red River campaign, and the writer has heard him relate many of the stirring scenes of that memorable march into the Red River country that was so devoid of results, and its return. In 1865, when mustered out, he removed with his family to Washington township, this county, where he lived many years upon a portion of the well known Des Moines River lands. He, like many others, was compelled to leave the home he had built up by his untiring energy. But in time the government partially reimbursed him for the loss of his home and he purchased a farm in Pleasant Valley township, where he made his home until
his death.
Mr. Crosby was a man of much force of character. He possessed a happy faculty of making friends with all whom he came in contact, whether in the routine of farm work, or in some duty connected with the church, of which he was a devoted member, or in some neighborly act of kindness. He was a man of integrity and that his family have grown up among us as respected members of
the community in which they reside, attests with great force, to the probity of his life and example.
Some time ago he received a stroke of paralysis, but in a measure recovered and was able to be around, at his accustomed duties at home. It was while on the road to this city, on the day of his death, he received the stroke that had a fatal termination. A few days before Christmas, his daughter, Mary, preceded him to the spirit land, and now he has gone to join her there. This double
bereavement in so short a time is a severe shock to the bereft wife and mother, as well as to the other members of the family. The funeral occurred Thursday afternoon from the Mericle school house, the remains being interred in the
Holiday Creek cemetery and were followed to their last resting place by a large number of friends of the family. Rev. Eli Price, of Lehigh, his pastor, conducted the services. We bespeak for the family the sincere sympathy of everyone. His genial and kindly presence will long be missed in the community in which he has lived so many years. signed, W.F.D."
