He was baptized when he was a small boy and joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1873. In March 1875 he moved with his parents to Wayne County, Ia. In the fall of 1876 he joined the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Seymour and was always a faithful worker in the order when his health would permit, filling all the offices of the subordinate lodge and encampment. He was united in marriage to Junietta Park September 22, 1886, and there were born to this union eight children. Inez, the eldest, and two boys died in infancy. Four years ago his wife died and he was left with five children to care for. He was kind and good to his family and gave them a good home. John was human and had his faults, but spent his last days in prayer and told his friends before he died that all was well.
