"Mrs. Lottie S. Swiggle -- Lottie S. Casey, daughter of John J. and Martha M. Casey, was born January 20, 1856, near Cincinnati, Ohio, and departed this life at her home near Grand River, Iowa, April 14, 1924, aged 68 years, 2 months and 25 days. When Lottie was just a child she removed with her parents and came to Western Illinois where the family resided until the children were grown. In February 1874, Miss Casey was united in holy wedlock to John A. McCreary of Ferris, Illinois. Six children were born to this happy union. All of them survive their parents except a babe which died at the age of six weeks. In 1878 the little family heard the call of the west and came to Wayne county, Iowa, and settled on a farm near Clio. For five years the family endured the hardship of a new country and were just beginning to see the way to better times when on Jan. 22, the husband and father died and Mrs. McCreary was left to provide for and manage the five remaining children. This she did as best she could and held the family together. Early the next fall she moved in to Allerton and resided there for several years. In 1893 Mrs. McCreary was united in marriage to George W. Swiggle. To this union three sons were born. The eldest, Jake, died at the tender age of nine months. The other two, Ben and Jay were strong and robust lads and have continued to abide in the parental home to be the support and comfort of their parents in their declining years. This noble task they have performed in a faithful and gracious manner and have been especially tender to their mother during the last three months of her protracted illness. Mrs. Swiggle leaves to mourn her passing her husband himself in failing health, seven children, two sisters and two brothers, nineteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The children are E.C. McCreary, Clio; William and Thomas McCreary of Dunlap, Ia.; Mrs. May M. Criley of Ottumwa, Ia.; Mrs. Hattie Cravens of Lineville, Ia.; and Ben and Jay Swiggle of Grand River, Ia. The brothers are, C.H. Casey of Greenfield, Ia.; and Eddie N. [sic] Casey of Witchita, Kans. The sisters are, Mrs. Hattie E. McCaslen of Ellwood, Ind.; and Mrs. Ida M. Duncan of Creston, Ia. Early in her young girlhood Mrs. Swiggle was converted to the Lord Jesus Christ as her Saviour and united with the church. When she moved to Iowa she transferred her membership to Allerton where it was at the time of her death. Her last illness was of about three months and a half duration. On Jan. 2nd she suffered a cerebral hemorrhage which finally resulted in her death. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. George W. Hall at the Grand River M.E. church on Wednesday morning. The interment was made at Allerton." (The Allerton News, Allerton, Iowa, 24 April 1924)
