Leon, Decatur County, IowaMarjorie Arlene Moore, age 97, of West Des Moines, Iowa, formerly rural Corydon, Iowa, died at Bickford Assisted Living in West Des Moines, Iowa on Monday, February 19, 2018. She was born to Wayne Everett and Lola Ida (McDowell) Hill, on November 21, 1920, at Woodland, Iowa.
Marjorie grew up on a farm in the Woodland – Lineville, Iowa area. She attended country schools through the eighth grade. She rented a room in town to further her education, graduating from Allerton, Iowa High School in 1940. She received her teaching certificate through Normal Training at Simpson College. She taught at three country schools before her marriage on August 5, 1943, to Jerry Reed Moore, Sr. in Unionville, Missouri. While Jerry was taking military training and was overseas during World War II Marjorie worked at a war equipment lab in the Quad Cities. The couple was blessed with two sons, Jerry Reed, Jr. and Larry Wayne. The family lived southwest of Seymour, Iowa on a farm from 1950, until 1979, when they retired to a house they built between the junction of highway 2 and 65 and Corydon, Iowa. Following Jerry’s death on May 17, 2007, Marjorie sold their home and moved to West Des Moines to an independent living complex.
Marjorie enjoyed cooking, baking, and gardening. She was a member of a women’s club and the Baptist Church in Seymour and then Corydon.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Jerry Moore; and sister, Doris Niday. Survivors include her children, Reed Moore and Lynn Marr-Moore of Kelley, Iowa and Larry and Connie Moore of West Des Moines, Iowa; two granddaughters, Marisa and Matt Petersen of Ankeny, Iowa and Stacey and Stephen Hanley of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; three step grandsons, Tim and Jenny Hugunin of Norwalk, Iowa, Ted and Jane Hugunin of St. George, Utah, and Travis and Jill Hugunin of Wilton, Iowa; five great grandchildren, Karenna, Brendan, Kiersten Petersen and Reese and Jack Hanley; six step great grandchildren, Alexandra, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Abigail, Carter, and Cameron Hugunin; sister, Irene Knapp of Des Moines, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Slade - O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2018. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Lineville, Iowa. Visitation is Monday prior to the funeral, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Memorials may be given to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation - Iowa Chapter OR the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville, Iowa in Marjorie’s memory.
