Corydon, Iowa, Sept. 19 - Death called one of the prominent citizens of this place yesterday when Alexander Mardis passed away at his home after a painful and lingering illness of several years.

The funeral was held at his late home Saturday afternoon and interment made in the Corydon cemetery.

Senator Mardis had been a citizen of Corydon for forty years. He came here as a young man and engaged in the business of contracting and creeting brick buildings. Three fourths of all of the permanent buildings in Corydon have been built by him. He served two terms as county auditar(sic) of the county and in 1899 he was elected to the state senate where he had a prominent part in the legislation of the Twenty-eighth and Twenty-ninth general assemblies.

In 1908, the year in which Taft was elected president, he was presidential elector from Iowa. For many years he has been president of the Wayne County State Bank, the oldest banking institution in Wayne county. He was 68 years of age and had been suffering for a number of years with Bright's disease.
