J. N McClanahan Dead

Corydon Democrat: Capt. J. N. McClanaghan died very suddenly at his residence east of the square Wednesday night from disease of the heart complicated with stomach trouble, after an illness of only about three hours. He had been feeling about as usual for him during the day but was taken ill about eight o’clock and physicians summoned, who did all in their power for him, but in vain and at 11 o’clock he died.

Capt. McClanaghan came to Wayne county about 1854, settling in Bethlehem. In 1857 he came to Corydon, finding employment in a drug store where he worked for several years, in the meantime studying law, and was admitted to the bar in 1861, entering into practice in partnership with Capt Estel and continuing in practice until he entered the union army as a Captain of C. F. 34th Iowa Infantry. He served until the close of the war when he went to Cleveland, Ohio, and took a full course in the Ohio State Law School, from which he graduated, coming west and practicing some time in Omaha, Neb., returning to Corydon about 1870 and entering into partnership with Hon. J. W. Freeland. He moved to Chariton where he resided for several years, being chosen mayor of that city. During his residence there he was elected Grand Master of Iowa Masons, a position he filled with honor and distinction.

Later he came back to Wayne County, settling on his farm in Benton Township where he resided until two years ago when he moved to Corydon which has since been his home.

Capt. McClanahan was a man of great force of character, strong in his convictions and positive in his ideas. He did what he considered his duty regardless of what people though, and aimed to wrong no one. He was a member of the Baptist church of this place. He was 72 years of age at the time of his death.

He leaves a wife, two daughters, Mrs. Edith Campbell of Kirksville, Mo., and Miss Ada, and one son, John, to mourn the loss.

His wife was Amanda STAFFORD McClanahan
