Mable (Small) Turnipseed

Services for Mable Lee Turnipseed, 89, Rock Island, are 10 a.m. Monday at Hodgson Funeral Home Ltd., Rock Island. Burial is in Rock Island Memorial Park. Visitation is 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church. Mrs. Turnipseed died Thursday, Aug. 17, 1995, at St. Anthony's Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. The former Mable Small was born Sept. 25, 1905, in Kalona, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Evie Dungar Small. She married Owen Turnipseed Oct. 27, 1923, in Washington, Iowa. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed her home, knitting, crocheting and gardening. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Louis Wemmer, Colorado Springs, Colo; a grandson, Bruce Wemmer, Lexington, Ky.; great-grandchildren, Amanda and Adam Wemmer; and a sister, Dessel Row, Coal Valley. A son, Owen, died May 13, 1994.

Virginia Wemmer, 89, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Rock Island, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at Cheyenne Mountain Care & Rehab Center, Colorado Springs. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island. Private interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to the ASPCA. Virginia was born March 27, 1924, in Rock Island, daughter of Owen C. and Mabel Small Turnipseed. She married Louis W. Wemmer on July 16, 1940, in Rock Island. He preceded her in death on Jan. 19, 1997. Virginia was a housewife the majority of her life and enjoyed fishing and watching sports on TV. Survivors include her son, Bruce Wemmer, Canon City, Colo.; grandsons, Adam Wemmer, Woodland Park, Colo., and Randall Carter, Opelieka, Ala.; granddaughter, Amanda Wemmer Best, Cripple Creek, Colo.; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Wemmer was preceded in death by her parents and her loving brother, Owen J. Turnipseed.
