Thomas Rankin - Obituary? 12/8/1880

There is information on online family histories, that my great, great grandfather, Thomas Rankin, died in 1861 in Pennsylvania. However, the 1880 census shows that he is living with my great grandfather- Amos Rankin, in Washington Iowa (but not on 1895 Iowa census).

I did find a death record on line, of a "Male Rankin" with a Date of Birth of 1802, dying in Jackson Twp, Washington Iowa on 12/8/1880- this information coincides with the census information. Would you please check if there is an obituary for a Thomas Rankin for a 12/8/1880 death?

Even though the 1880 census indicates this is his father, I'm a little skeptical since he would have been 53 years old at the time Amos was born - not impossible- but unusual. Possibly a grandfather or older uncle who raised him? (Family documentation does indicate a Thomas as Amos as the father and Amelia Cooper as the mother, but do not have dates of birth).
