Found records on a William G Smith...

1850 Census: Division 20, Washington, IA include William G Smith (24) b. about 1824, VA; and wife Mare Smith 21

1856 Iowa State census: English River, Washington, IA include William G. (30), born VA, Farmer; wife Hannah (29), born VA; son Edward (1) born IA

1870 US Census: Washington Township, Johnson Co, IA includes William (44); Hannah (45); Edward (18); David L. (12); Samuel (11); Earnest D. (9); Emily (6); and George (3)

1880 US Census: Washington Township, Johnson Co, IA includes Hannah (53) widow; Edward (24)school teacher; David (23) school teacher; Samuel (21) farming; Earnest (19); Emily (16); and George (13)

WPA records and IA Genweb Gravestone Photo Project (GPP link attached) show several Smith family members in Snider cemetery in English River, Washington Co. IA:

William G. Smith b. 1827, d. May 10, 1879, age 52
Hannah Smith b. 1826, d. Feb 12, 1882, age 56
Mary C. Smith d. May 1, 1851
