GUTHER, MAHNKE, MATTHESS, CARTER

Carl H. Guther, long-time photographer in Washington prior to his retirement in 1953, died his morning, Sept. 27, 1972 at the United Presbyterian Home here. His home had been at 27 Maple Lane on the Home grounds prior to a lengthy illness.

The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. in Sherman - Eden Funeral Home with the Rev. M. O. Smith in charge. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. A memorial fund for Mr. Guther has been started, with funds to go to the Health Center of the United Presbyterian Home. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Guther was born in Hamburg, Germany, a son of Carl H. and Dora Mahnke Guther. He was married Jan. 10, 1920 in Sioux City, to Bertha Matthess and they had lived here since 1922. He was a member of the Methodist church; a former member of the Masonic Lodge, Consistory and Shrine, and a member of the American Legion and the YMCA in Washington.

He also was a member of the National Photographers Association. He owned and operated Guther Studio from 1922 until 1953 and served in the photographic section of the US Air Force in World War I.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Carla) Carter; one granddaughter, Cathi Carter; one grandson, Brian Carter, all of Washington; one sister, Mrs. Marie Maassen of Clear Lake. One sister preceded him in death, along with his parents.
