Bertha Guther, 89, dies
Bertha M. Guther, who along with her husband owned and operated a photography studio in Washington for more than 30 years, died today, March 24, 1984, at Washington County Hospital. She was 89 and had been in failing health for the past six weeks.
Services will be at 1 p. m. Monday at Sherman–Eden Funeral Home in Washington, with the Rev Deborah Klesey officiating. Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for the county hospital’s coronary care unit.
Mrs. Guther was born June 16, 1894, in Wellman, the daughter of Lewis and Lily Matthess. She was raised in Des Moines and graduated from East High School. She attended Des Moines business College and later taught business courses at East High School.
She married Carl H. Guther on Jan 10, 1920, in Sioux City. They operated Guther Studio in Washington from 1922 to 1953. Mr. Guther died Sept 27, 1972, and Mrs. Guther had been a resident of the United Presbyterian Home here the past 17 years. Mrs. Guther was a 50-year member and past president of PEO and was also a member of WSCS and Fortnightly. During World War I, she was appointed chief clerk of Iowa’s military draft.
Survivors include a daughter, Carla (Mrs. Raymond) Carter of Washington; a granddaughter, Cathi (Mrs. Dan) Hill of Washington; a grandson, Brian Carter of Davenport; and a brother, W. L. Matthess of Riverside, Calif. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother and one sister
