In Korea, Oct. 14

Pvt. George Jerome Schaefer, 23, son of Mrs. Ona Schaefer of Richmond was killed in action in Korea October 14, the defense department informed his mother.

No other details of his death have been received. Pvt. Schaefer was inducted into the army March 22, 1951 and went overseas July 29 after training at Ft. Riley, Kansas. He was born August, 25, 1928 near Kalona, the son of George and Ona (Kloepfer) Schaefer. He graduated from Holy Trinity school at Richmond and Kalona high school.

He was a member of Holy Trinity church at Richmond. Private Schaefer was preceded in death by his father in 1936. He is survived by his mother, two brothers, Francis of Ferguson, Missouri and Warren of Kalona, his grandmother Mrs. William Kloepfer, Kalona, niece, Mary Louise Schaefer and an uncle Ernest Kloepfer, Kalona and six uncles of St. Louis, Missouri.

FUNERAL SERVICES FOR PVT. SCHAEFER MONDAY

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 21 at 9 o'clock in Holy Trinity church Richmond with Rev. Fr. W. F. Boeckmann singing the requiem mass.

The body of Pvt. Schaefer arrived in Iowa City on Saturday morning and was immediately taken to the Peterseim and Son Funeral Home accompanied by the Military escort, Sgt Chas. Votruba, where it remained until 7 o'clock Sunday evening. It was then taken to Holy Trinity Church where the congregation recited the rosary.

Following the services members of the Richmond AmVet Post acted as a guard of honor through services. Monday morning they were joined by the English River Post American Legion for Military graveside services.

Pallbearers included Robert Chapek, Claude Escher, Alphonse Kloepfer, Richard Stumpf, Vere Allen, and Robert TeBockhorst. Interment was made in the Holy Trinity cemetery.

Among those from a distance attending the funeral service were Francis Schaefer, Ferguson, Mo.; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Schaefer, Columbia, Mo.; Beth Stumpf, Rock Island, Ill.; Nick Bakaris, Davenport.
