Kalona Boy Dies in Mishap

KALONA - A 10-year-old rural Kalona boy died after the bicycle he was riding collided with a car about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Daniel L. Yoder, the son of Mr. and Mrs. David L. Yoder was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital in Iowa City.
The Yoder boy was riding his bicycle on Highway 22 about one mile west of Kalona. Mary Miller, 25, of rural Kalona, was driving the car involved in the accident.
The Washington County Sheriff's Department said both vehicles were eastbound. No charges were filed.

Funeral services for Daniel Lynn Yoder are set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church with burial at Fairview Cemetery. Morris Swartzendruber and John H. Miller will officiate. The Peterseim Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fun has been established.
Daniel was born May 26, 1962, in Washington County to David and Verna Beachy Yoder and would have been a fifth grader at Kalona Elementary School this fall.
Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, James and Lowell; three sisters, Joy, Grace and Faith, and two foster sisters, Lillie and Mary Lou, all at home; and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Beachy and Mrs. Lena R. Yoder, all of Kalona.
One brother preceded him in death.

Officials said the boy was eastbound on the highway when he pulled his bicycle out in front of an eastbound car driven by Mary Miller, 25, also of rural Kalona.
Officials say the boy was struck by the car and thrown about 20 feet.
