Kenneth Duane Farrier, 83, of Brighton, died at home Thursday, May 1, 2014.

Kenneth D. Farrier

Kenneth D. Farrier, 83, of Brighton, died Thursday, May 1, 2014, at home.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Brighton United Church, with the Rev. Rick Zickefoose officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Visitation at Brighton United Church opens at 2 p.m. Tuesday, with family present from 5-7 p.m.

Memorials may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 102 N. Benton St., Brighton 52540.

Arrangements are in the care of Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

Mr. Farrier was born May 18, 1930, in Brighton, the son of Floyd "Turk" and Francelia Dickinson Farrier.

Mr. Farrier graduated from Brighton High School in 1948 and attended barber school in Cedar Rapids. He married Patricia Coakley in 1953 in Washington. She died in 1960. He married Betty R. Wyse Harris in Fairfield Dec. 30, 1961.

He lived in Brighton until moving to a farm northwest of Brighton where he farmed and raised cattle and hogs while operating his barbershop for 50 years in Brighton, retiring in 1998.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He served on the Brighton City Council.

He was a member of Brighton's American Legion Post No. 504.

He was a longtime member of the Brighton United Church.

He enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, softball, dancing, barbecuing and grandkids.

Survivors include his wife, Betty; four daughters, Peggy Baumert of Brighton, Dorothy Carothers of Ottumwa, Brenda Ragen of Hedrick and Celesta Brendl and spous Peter of Tiffin; one son, Bradley Farrier and spous Liesl of Centennial, Colorado; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Donna Goss of Arlington, Texas.

In addition to his first wife, Patricia, he was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Douglas; and three brothers, Keith, Kerm and Karol.
