Death of Co. Sup't Moore

Capt. Isaiah G. Moore, our excellent Co. Sup't of Schools, died of consumption at 3 o'clock on Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 1869, in the 36th year of his age. A native of Ohio, he had long lived in this place. In 1861, he enlisted as a private in the 2nd Iowa, campaigned through Missouri until his health failed when he was furloughed. Recovering strength, he required --not legible-- went in as captain in the 11th Iowa. He --not legible-- several engagements, Shiloh being their heaviest battle in which they suffered grievously. He was in command of quite a force in Mississippi for some time. At length disabled, in 1865, by sickness, he resigned and came home, his body already containing the seeds of the disease which destroyed him.

In the summer of 1867, he was appointed the office of Co. Sup't vice Rev. C Thompson, resigned, and was himself elected that fall, and re-elected last fall. It is conceded by all that he raised the grade of teachers in this county several degrees, created a new spirit in that profession, and bettered the schools in many ways. His heart was in the work.

His physical endurance held out remarkably. He actually wore out and was around until the last. He sat up all day before his death, and on Wednesday morning walked across the room and talked to a man out the window. A week before, he walked up to Thompson's and back about four blocks, to get Christmas gifts. With cheerfulness he set his house in order, arranging all his business preparatory to setting out on the long journey.

At midnight of Wednesday he felt that his hour was come and told his wife to "bid the children good bye for him and ask them always be good to mother." An hour before death he had a painful coughing spell, after which he turned upon his left side, his hand beneath his pillow, and thus in full consciousness, breathed his last as if the long slumber into which he was lapsing were but for a summer night.

The funeral took place on Friday and was largely attended.

(Note: Isaiah's wife was Isabella Brown)
