Death of Thomas Maxwell

Another old settler has been gathered to his fathers in the death of Thomas Maxwell, which occurred Thursday, September 24. He was a few days less than 79 and had lived in Iowa since 1846. His wife died about 15 years ago. Two children, John and Anna of this city, are all who remain of the family. Thomas Maxwell was born in Harrison County, Ohio, and was one of a large family. The surviving members of his father's family are Samuel of Missouri, Robert and John of Crawford tp., Mrs. G. T. Auld of this city, Mrs. Wm. Johnson of Columbus City and Mrs. Jas. McCulley of Winfield. Mr. Maxwell had been in ill health for fifty years, resulting from overwork at the time of a great flood in Stillwater Creek Valley. The water was carrying everything before it pell mell, and he was at work trying to save their property, with the above result.

Mr. Maxwell was a member of the Seceder church and a very good man. The funeral, Saturday, was largely attended. The services were conducted by Revs. Masson and Davidson.
