Mrs. Ann Augustine

The death of Mrs. Ann Augustine, aged 89 years, which occurred Monday evening, one of the very earliest pioneer settlers of Washington county. She came with her parents to Washington county in 1838, locating a short distance southwest of Washington, and her brother Jesse Harvey, was the first white child born in Washington county. For more than 80 years she has been a resident of the county, most of the time in Dutch Creek township.
Death was due to infirmities of age, and she had been failing steadily for the last few months. She came of hardy pioneer stock and had lived an active, fruitful life, blessed by good health and a courageous, helpful and unselfish devotion to her home and family and the best things in life. Ever since she was a small girl, Mrs. Augustine had been a member of the Methodist church holding her membership in the Bethel church near her home.
Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Pease of West Chester Methodist church. Interment was made in White Oak cemetery.
Ann Harvey Augustine was born in Hampshire county, Virginia, November 25, 1830, and was a daughter of W. L. Harvey, who lived in West Virginia for a short time after her birth, later moving to Illinois and then to Washington county, settling on a place a mile and one-half southwest of Washington, in 1838. She was married Oct. 25, 1848, to Godfrey Augustine, and they took up their residence in Dutch Creek township, where Mr. Augustine died in 1906.
Surviving her are the following children: William David Augustine, of Dutch Creek; Mrs. Hester Ann Statler of the Keota community; George W. Augustine of Dutch Creek; Mrs. Emily Jane Luers of Dutch Creek; and Sherman Augustine of Mt. Pleasant. Three children are deceased. She leaves on brother, Jesse Harvey of Wellston, and one sister, Mrs. Hester Carkuff, of Whittier, California--Washington Journal.
