Maranda Marie Schoonover, age 84, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.

Maranda was born April 12, 1927 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Ralph E. and Esther R. (Rittenhouse) Martin. She attended school in Washington, Iowa and graduated from Washington High School in 1945. Maranda then attended the University of Iowa for one year. She was united in marriage to Norman F. Schoonover on June 16, 1946 in Washington, Iowa.

Maranda was a life resident of Washington, Iowa. She and her husband owned and operated Schoonover Drug Store in Washington, Iowa for 46 years. Maranda worked as a bookkeeper, clerk and Pharmacist's Technician. She also worked as a Home Interior consultant for many years.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington where she was active in many committees, sung in the choir and was a member of United Methodist Women. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Fortnightly Music Department and the Washington Choral Society.

Maranda loved to read, work with her hands, and to sing. Her passion for singing took her to Carnegie Hall, where she performed with the Washington Choral Society. She was a member of various bowling leagues, and enjoyed square dancing and playing cards, especially Pinochle. She was a fond collector of teapots, teddy bears, and angels. Maranda also enjoyed traveling to visit family and spending time with her grandchildren. She also delighted in spending time at the log cabin in Ely, Minnesota.

She is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Schoonover of Longmont, Colorado; daughter Martha Rasso and husband Terry of Moline, Illinois; daughter Sara Machael and husband Hal of Maquoketa, Iowa; son Eric Schoonover and wife Diana of Washington, Iowa; son Norman "Bub" Schoonover II of Blanchard, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one sister Mary Martin of Duluth, Minnesota.

Maranda was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1999 and one great grandchild.
