Alva Winter rites set

Alva E. Winters. 62, native of Fairfield and custodian at Jefferson County Courthouse for nearly 10 years, died early Sunday morning at his home at 304 W. Jackson.

Services will be Tuesday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Charles Kinkaid officiating. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery near Brighton.

Members of the family will receive friends at the Raymond Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9:30 this evening.

Alva E. Winter was born July 6, 1916, in Fairfield. He was the son of John and Elfie Longerbone Winter. He spent his entire life in Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1934.

He was a painter and interior decorator for a number of years before he was appointed custodian at the Jefferson County Courthouse Dec. 15, 1969.

Winter was a member of the First Christian Church where he served many years as chairman, elder, deacon and building treasurer.

Survivors include his widow, two daughters, Sandra Fortney, Muscatine, and Jane Phillips, Seattle, Wash., and three grandchildren.

He is also survived by three brothers and three sisters. They include Beatrice Crawford, Washington; Juanita Scott, Boulder, Colo; Freda Marr, Mount Pleasant; John Winter, Fairfield; Russell Winter, Libertyville; and Lawrence Winter, West Des Moines.

Winter was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.
