John E. “Jack” Williamson
(1819 – January 6, 1900)They Go Quietly
The following was received by T. T. Anderson Monday night:
Marshalltown, Ia., Jan 7, 1900
Dear Friend: Comrade Williamson died last night, Jan 6, 1900. He had been failing for months; about a week or ten days ago, they took him to the hospital. Last night while sitting on the side of his cot, he threw his hands up to his heart and said to the nurse, “I am going.” These were his last words and he died immediately, as reported to me by the steward. There are three corpses at the hospital now, 8 a.m., and another expected to go any minute. The “old boys” are “going.” Fraternally yours, B. A. Beeson
Comrade “Jack” Williamson was 1st Chief Bugler of the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and was without doubt the best bugler in the western army, a fact conceded by all who ever heard him blow that instrument. After the promotion of Col. Ed Hatch to Brigadier General, he was detailed to go with that intrepid rough rider, both of whom have now surrendered to the Conqueror of all. Under the same blanket he and I slept together many times. He was my friend and comrade. T. T. Anderson. Source – Indianola Herald, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs., Jan 11, 1900, p.2
