Obituary
Murray Wood
Murray Wood was born on Feb. 18, 1879, near Smith Center, Kan., son of John F. and Margaret McCrea Wood. In early childhood he and his parents moved in a covered wagon from Kansas to make their home in Iowa. He attended rural schools in Warren County and farmed with his father. As a young man he lived in the west for several years and practiced the carpenter trade. He was married to Janie E. Spohn on April 28, 1919. Two children were born. In 1915 the family moved back to Iowa where Mr. Wood worked as a contractor and builder until, in later years, ill health prevented him from doing any heavy work. Since then he has refinished furniture. He became a member of Browns Chapel Church in young manhood and later his membership was transferred to the Methodist Church in Indianola where he especially enjoyed attending the Smith Bible class and singing in church choir groups. After a six weeks’ illness, he died at his home in Indianola on Feb. 22, 1956, at the age of 77. He has been preceded in death by his parents and four brothers. He is survived by his wife, Janie, two daughters, Arlene (Mrs. Lloyd Hillman) of Menlo Park, Calif., and Erma (Mrs. Otto Golz) of Bridgewater, three sisters, Mrs. Alma Scott of Baraboo, Wis., Mrs. Lorena Moore and Mrs. Victor Ruble of Indianola; and four brothers: Fred, Perry, Carroll, all of Indianola, and Tyler of Des Moines, six grandchildren: Melinda, Karen and Christina Hillman and Dick, Carolyn and John Golz; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. A. J. Kindred Feb. 24 in the Methodist Church school building. Burial was in the local cemetery. Source - Record Herald & Indianola Tribune, Indianola, Iowa, Thurs., April 5, 1956, p.11
