George W. Chittenden
(August 28, 1808 – January 21, 1882)

DIED – At the residence of his son, J. S. Chittenden, in Indianola, on Saturday January 21st, 1882, Mr. Geo. W. Chittenden, in the 74th year of his age. Mr. Chittenden was born August 28, 1808, in the state of New York. When about 12 years of age his father and family removed to the state of Kentucky. After a few years’ residence in that state, they removed to Hancock County, Indiana, removed to Illinois in 1842 and came to Iowa 12 years ago. Was married in 1830 to Miss Ann Van Guilder, who died nine years since. By this marriage they had 11 children, of which nine are still living and all of whom were present at his funeral. He united with the Methodist church in 1824 and remained a faithful member up to his death; the last words uttered by him being, “It is all well.” Coming to visit his son, J. S. Chittenden, in this place, a short time since, he was suddenly taken ill, and after less than two weeks he was called away. The funeral services were held at the Fairview M. E. Church and conducted by the Rev. Kennedy, and the body was laid in the cemetery south of the church the same day.
