Oran Josephus Smith was born May 17, 1859, at Montezuma, Iowa. He passed away April 6, 1931, aged 71 years, 10 months and 19 days. Oran was the son of Richard and Christena Smith and grew to manhood in Poweshiek County. He was united in marriage with Laura Higgins, December 28, 1882. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Cella M. Williams, Mora, Minn., and Leota F. Smith, Chicago; and two sons, Roy A. Smith, Minneapolis and Cary B. Smith, Ackworth; and by five brothers and sister. Nearly all of his life was spent in Iowa. He moved to a farm near Ackworth in 1902 and resided in Indianola at the time of his death. Early in life he joined the Methodist Episcopal Church. He has always been a faithful Christian, and true husband, and a kind and loving father, a friend to all with whom he came in contact. Life was always to him a serious task, into which he put earnest, sincere and patient effort. He has left behind him the record of a life well lived, with much of kindness and loving care that will ever be remembered. The funeral service was held at the Orr Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, April 8, at 2 o’clock, conducted by Dr. Arthur Atack. Burial was in the Indianola Cemetery.
