Henrietta Louise Huss
(October 5, 1924 - September 18, 2020)

Services for Henrietta Louise Huss, 95, who passed away Friday, September 18, 2020, in Des Moines, IA, will be held 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, September 22, 2020, at the Martensdale Community Church, Martensdale, IA. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Des Moines.
She fell in love at first sight with her husband Fred Huss at a 4th of July street dance in 1942. They had only seen each other that one night. Fred went to World War II and they corresponded by letters for three years and they waited for each other. They got married on November 5, 1945 and had five children. They started their married life at Fort Des Moines housing. She didn’t want to live in the city so Fred found an acreage in Churchville where they spent the rest of their lives together. They raised their family in Churchville, Iowa. She was a stay at home mother and enjoyed her life.
They enjoyed family vacations while raising their family. They traveled to 50 states with her children. After Fred retired, they went on an around the world tour and several other overseas vacations. Thru the years on the homestead, they grew strawberries, red raspberries, and various produce. They let people come to the property and pick their own berries. When Fred got back from the war, he bought a necklace for his future wife to wear on her wedding day. Henrietta wore it on her wedding day and his wishes were his future daughters to wear on their wedding day. All of her daughters and daughters-in-law did wear this necklace on their wedding day. The necklace is available for all future bride in the family. Several of her grand-daughter, grandson’s brides, and 1 great-grand-daughter have worn it.
After her children were raised and then all married the family had several gatherings every year. We got together every holiday we could. Easter was always one huge gathering where everyone tried to attend. Her daughter Virginia would read the story of Jesus resurrection to all the children. Mother’s Day was another special holiday where all the females got together to do something special. Several years it was at Martensdale Community church. We also went to Perry tea room, Pella tea room, and the botanical center. We tried to get together on her birthday as many times as we could, too. Henrietta’s 75th and 90th birthdays were huge celebrations.
Henrietta was very active in her church at Martensdale Community Church. Henrietta and Fred setup communion together for many years. She was also an Awana Cubbies leader well into her 90’s. Henrietta worked with many of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and lead them to the Lord. Henrietta also enjoyed going to her pastor Joel and Donna’s house for Sunday night bible study until about a year ago. We will always remember her favorite song was “Jesus loves me” and she sang it to everyone she came into contact with.
Survivors include her children, Virginia Lee (Richard) Petersen, Kathy (Cliff) Brandenburg, Judy Clark, Rick Huss and James (Sharon) Huss; 18 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; five great great-grandchildren; and siblings, Dorothy Jean Curtis, Dean Meyer and Marilyn Wright-Campbell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Huss; parents, Henry and Bertha Meyer; two brothers; and four sisters.
We will miss her so much as the pillar of her whole loving family. There was never a time in any of her kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and great-great-grandkids lives she missed. Henrietta was there for everyone at all times during her amazing life.
Visitation will be held 3 to 8 p.m., Monday, September 21, 2020, at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
