Funeral services for Lewis Charles Smith, 85, will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the Regular Baptist Church, Indianola, IA. Visitation will be held two hours prior to service from 9 to 11 a.m. Interment will be held 11 a.m., Monday, April 26, 2021 in the Olena Mound Cemetery, Buffalo Center, IA.
Lewis Charles “Chuck” Smith, son of Lewis Clifford and Ethel Marie (Ries) Smith was born on August 8, 1935 in Murray, Iowa. He graduated from Clearfield, Iowa High School in 1953. After graduation, Chuck went to Des Moines and worked for A&P Grocery Stores. In 1958, he went into the Army and was stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma for two years and was honorable discharged in 1964. After the service he returned to Des Moines and got a job as a printer and worked for several different businesses.
On March 23, 1963, Chuck married Gloria Weaver at Grace Methodist Church in Des Moines. They were blessed with 58 years of marriage. In 1974, they moved to Midland, TX and returned to Iowa in 1977. They resided in Manson, IA until 1978 when they moved to Indianola. Chuck worked in Des Moines for National Travelers, Iowa Methodist Headquarters and Lutheran Social Services. In April 2004, he took a job as a transit driver for Red Rock Area Community Action Program of Warren County which later became HIRTA. After 13 years with them he quit due to health issues.
Chuck died Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at his home in Indianola at the age of 85 years, 8 months and 21 days. He was a member of Indianola Regular Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. He accepted Christ as his savior on October 25, 1968 and was a witness to many people.
He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Gloria; sisters-in-law, Karen Penning of Buffalo Center, IA, Debra (Dan) Fardal of Forest City, IA; brother-in-law, Richard (Beverly) Meyer of Meeker, CO; nieces, nephews and many friends and relatives. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Ruth who died in infancy and Janet Marie Meyer; and brother-in-law, Doug Penning.
