Svetoslav Dimitrov Sinapov
(February 12, 1951 - September 4, 2021)

On September 4th, 2021, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend Svet passed away after a brave battle with cancer.
Svet was born in Burgas, Bulgaria in 1951 to parents Stanka and Dimiter Sinapov. He met his wife Lydia in high school in 1968, and they got married in Bulgaria in 1978, after he completed his education and military service. Lydia and Svet had two children, a daughter Dima born in 1981, and a son Jivko born in 1983.
Svet’s life journey was extraordinary. He obtained a Masters degree in Geophysics at Moscow University in Russia in 1975, and during his studies he went on several geological expeditions in Crimea and the deserts of Uzbekistan. After his military service, he worked as a geophysicist in Bulgaria, designing computerized measurement devices for signal recording. Svet’s knowledge and skills in mathematics, physics and computer technologies were exceptional, and in 1993 he accepted a job offer from Intercontinental Software, Palo Alto and moved to the United States of America. Later he worked for Interactive Business Systems in Dallas, TX, and Lucent Technologies in Denver, CO.
This was a very challenging time for Svet because his family was still in Bulgaria, and being in a foreign country for four years without family was not easy. However, his courageous spirit and determination to succeed helped him overcome the difficulties of the unfamiliar work environment and culture, and ultimately thrive. His family joined him in Denver in 1997 but two years later they were on the move again. Svet accepted a job in Seattle, WA, with Ciber Custom Solutions Group, while Lydia and Jivko moved to Indianola, IA when Lydia joined the computer science department at Simpson College, and Dima started college at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In 2002 Svet joined Lydia and Jivko in Indianola. Svet was a life-long learner and in 2014 he obtained a BA Cum Laude in Computer Information Systems from Simpson College. He worked for 15 years for Iowa Student Loan Liquidation Corporation, and retired in 2017.

Svet was a very creative person with many talents. He enjoyed building things, ranging from home furniture to computers. At age 12, he built a portable radio receiver. He designed the circuitry and constructed a color-music device, attached to his cassette player. As Dima and Jivko were growing up, Svet used to bring home interesting electronics and computerized devices, and they were much fun to play with. Two months ago, he started constructing a customized computer, which remains unfinished at home. Svet had several other hobbies. He played violin, enjoyed painting and drawing. Most of all, he loved fishing. He especially enjoyed going to Lake Ahquabi, where he was often seen on his boat Stanka, named after his mother.
Svet was blessed with two grandchildren Katy and Carson. He loved them very much and enjoyed being with them. Very often he took care of them when their mother Dima was traveling for work. Katy and Carson loved spending time with their dyado, and they had a lot of fun together. Svet lived a rewarding and fulfilling life. He will be remembered as a kind person with a gentle soul, always there to brighten the lives of others. Whenever Lydia’s students had questions related to system software and hardware, he was there to give answers and advice. He helped two of Lydia’s students with their capstone project to construct a Lego Mindstorm robot that can draw. He spent hours on the phone with his sister and sister-in-law helping them to deal with some new software product. He was of great help to Lydia when she was teaching the Android programming course.
Svet was highly valued by his co-workers and deeply loved by his family, relatives and friends. His passing is a great loss for everyone who knew him.
Celebration of Life services for Svet Sinapov will be held 10:30 a.m., October 2, 2021 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. Visitation will be held from 10 to 10:30 a.m. prior to service. Memorials may be given to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in his name.
