(April 19, 1930 - January 11, 2022)

Mildred Marie Sargent, 91, passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Vintage Hills in Indianola, IA. Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 17, 2022 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola, with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Mildred was born April 19, 1930 to William and Vera Coffman near Indianola. She grew up in rural Indianola and graduated from Indianola High School in 1948. On January 22nd, 1949, Mildred married Howard Sargent, a union that lasted 59 years until Howard’s death in 2008. Except for a brief time in California during Howard’s years in the United States Marine Corps, they spent their lives in Indianola. Mildred was a bookkeeper at Continental New Method in Indianola and later at Farmers Mutual Hail in Des Moines, until her retirement in 1996.
Mildred was an avid bowler and bowling took her across the country as she participated in over 25 national tournaments. She loved sports and was a devoted fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and Chicago Cubs. Like many of her generation, she rejoiced when the Cubs finally won a World Series in 2016. She was a loving mother, grandmother and particularly enjoyed sharing stories and pictures of her great-grandchildren.
Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and husband Howard, along with her brothers Merrill, Raymond, Eldon, and Rodney Coffman, sisters Evie Boucher and Edna Mae Bales, and step-mother Velma Coffman. She is survived by her son, Kenneth (Mary Lou) of Northfield, MN.; daughter, Kathy Putney; and special friend, Gary Bryan of Indianola; brother, Richard Coffman (June) of Milo; sister, Dorothy Kreider of Des Moines; sisters-in law, Joyce Coffman of Indianola and Betty Coffman of Milo; four grandchildren, Andrew Sargent of Phoenix, AZ, Emily Sargent of Northfield, MN, Laurel Olson (Adam) of Granger, IA, and Ryan Putney (Crystal) of Des Moines, IA; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her very special friend, John Crouch, who provided great companionship in her final years.
Visitation will be held 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday, January 16 at Overton Funeral Home where family will be present to greet friends. The family wishes to thank the staff at Vintage Hills and St. Croix Hospice for the comfort and care they provided during Mildred’s final days. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church or Kiya Koda Humane Society in her name.
