Evalina Stowell
(July 26, 1946 - January 22, 2022)

A Celebration of Life Service for Mary Evalina “Nena” Stowell, 75, of Indianola, IA, will be held 2 p.m., Friday, January 28, 2022 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola.
A loving, generous and beautiful person was lost to her family and many friends Saturday, January 22, 2022, after undergoing major heart surgery. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her and were touched by her vivacious, artistic spirit.
Mary Evalina Manucy Stowell, or Nena, as she was known to many people, was born in St. Augustine, Florida on July 26, 1946. After attending primary and secondary schools there, she graduated from Florida State University in Art Education in 1969, and moved to Iowa with her sister, Bette, to teach art at Lincoln High School in Des Moines. In 1972, she married Walton Danforth Stowell (Kip), an architect with the National Park Service and moved to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Her son, Walton Danforth, Jr., was born in 1976. Nena lived and worked in Harpers Ferry until 2016, when she again moved to be near her sister, Bette, at The Village in Indianola, Iowa.
During her working years, Nena was an active artist, an art teacher in the public schools, and a certified Montessori teacher. She loved to create and be surrounded by beautiful things. She also loved being with people. She was a social butterfly, involving herself in a variety of activities everywhere she lived. When she came to The Village, she joined several groups and quickly became a lively presence.
Nena was preceded in death by her husband, Kip (2009). She is survived by her son, Walton Stowell, Jr. (Noel Tavano); sister, Bette Haddox (Bruce); brothers Mark Manucy (Ann) and James Manucy (Linda); five nieces and nephews; and six great nieces and nephews. All will miss her greatly and grieve her passing.
In lieu of flowers, gifts may be given, in her name, to The Good Shepherd Fund at The Village 1203 North E Street, Indianola, IA 50125, or the First United Methodist Church, 307 W Ashland Avenue, Indianola, IA 50125. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
