(December 12, 1935 - March 8, 2022)

Services for Johnny “John” Bumgarner, 86, who passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2022, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola with burial following in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
Johnny was known to be a man of few words. When he did speak, his well-chosen words were impactful. Johnny was, instead, a man of action. He loved maintaining his home where he provided meticulous care for his yard. Johnny was not afraid to join his beloved wife in even the most domestic activities around the home including washing dishes, laundry, and cooking. He thoroughly enjoyed maintaining a productive life.
Johnny was raised in a rural farmhouse in Liberty Center, Iowa where he graduated from high school in 1954. His parents were William and Olive (Kennedy) Bumgarner. Johnny was raised with his two siblings, Maxine and William. At a young age, he enjoyed farming with his family. Johnny met his future bride, Mildred “Betty” Davey, in 1955 on the Indianola square. Johnny and Betty spent 62 years in a loving marriage. They raised their two daughters, Vicki (Tracy) Jensen and Julie (Mark) Peck while living in their forever Indianola home.
Johnny was an active member and former president of the Indianola Jaycees organization throughout his early adult life. He mentored many community youth through involvement with the Soap Box Derby association. Johnny coached his daughters’ softball teams. Traveling for square dancing was a favorite shared activity between Johnny and his wife. After retiring from Firestone Tire and Rubber Company in 1985, Johnny and Betty spent their free time camping with friends in local parks and campgrounds. The couple bowled together, played cards, and entertained family in their home. Johnny especially loved being among his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He had three grandchildren, Alissa (Matt) Wehmeyer, Cody (Megan) Jensen, and Delaney Peck. Johnny had five great-grandchildren including Emma Wehmeyer, Chase Wehmeyer, Callan Jensen, Brooks Jensen, and Tyson Wehmeyer.
After the passing of Betty, Johnny spent the final three years of his life being well-cared for by the staff at Vintage Hills in Indianola where he especially enjoyed teasing the staff. His days were made extra special when his daughters and their families visited, joined him for meals, and while he was watching the great-grandchildren at play.
Johnny demonstrated his dedication and love for his bride especially during their final years together when he tirelessly ensured that Betty was able to enjoy life. Together, they embodied their marital vows, "In sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”
Johnny was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Bumgarner, parents, William and Olive Bumgarner; sister, Maxine Weeks and brother, William Bumgarner.
Johnny is survived by his daughters, Vicki (Tracy) Jensen and Julie (Mark) Peck; grandchildren Alissa (Matt) Wehmeyer, Cody (Megan) Jensen and Delaney Peck; great-grandchildren, Emma Wehmeyer, Chase Wehmeyer, Callan Jensen, Brooks Jensen and Tyson Wehmeyer.
Visitation will be held prior to services from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family requests those that wish to honor his life to donate to Heal House of Iowa. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
