Larry Dean White
(June 7, 1943 - Feb 27, 2022)

Larry Dean White, 78, formerly of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, passed peacefully on Sunday, February 27, 2022, from complications of renal disease at Good Samaritan Society in Indianola, Iowa.
Larry was born on June 7, 1943, to Edna and Hughie White in rural Calhoun, Missouri. After completing high school, Larry enlisted in the US Army. He served proudly in the 2nd Armored Division (“Hell on Wheels”) and was honored to be part of a racially integrated tank crew. Larry often reveled in sharing stories of the time he spent in Germany in the early 1960s.
Shortly after his discharge, Larry relocated to Cedar Rapids, where he would meet and marry Anita Benter. They would later divorce. Anita preceded Larry in death in 2015. Larry is survived by a son, Bob (Becky) Peery, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren (all in the Cedar Rapids area). Larry is also survived by a daughter, Susan (Malinda Wade) White of Des Moines.
Larry worked in home improvement for many years, often operating his own business. He enjoyed helping people renovate their properties and had a tool for everything. For the last several years, Larry was employed by Home Depot where he enjoyed mentoring and sharing his knowledge of all-things construction. Larry was a tireless worker who instilled in his children the importance of a strong work ethic and doing things right the first time.
A solitary man, Larry enjoyed time alone and was not inclined to socialize. He enjoyed working in his yard, tending his roses and garden. If not outdoors or in the garage tinkering, you’d find Larry watching Nascar or reading a novel about the old west. Larry had a great love of animals and had an extremely strong bond with his “granddog” Bean, who he referred to as his Hero Dog on multiple occasions.
Per Larry’s wishes, there will be no public service or memorial. Larry will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa. Larry requested that donations be made to the animal rescue or welfare organization of one’s choosing in lieu of flowers or cards.
Larry’s family wishes to express special gratitude for the extraordinary caregivers at Good Samaritan in Indianola, and especially the team at Hospice of the Midwest, who made is final journey comfortable.
Dad’s childhood dream was to be a cowboy. He longed for a solitary, nomadic, fiercely independent life -the unencumbered life portrayed in the programs and stories of his youth. With certainty, Dad is saddled up (probably on a stubborn old mule) roaming free on the range with his faithful childhood dog, Friday, by his side. Ride free, Dad, and smell that sweet alfalfa once again. This memorial is provided by Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Ave., Indianola, Iowa, http://www.overtonfuneral.com/
