Rose Katherine Owen was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on May 13, 1831, and died Feb. 26, 1911 at her late home in this city, after being confined to her bed a week from a stroke of paralysis. At the age of 19 she moved with her parents from Kentucky to Scott County, Missouri, and on March 20, 1855 was married to J. S. Starr. Two children were the fruits of this union, Dr. John Starr of Pocahontas, and a daughter, Mrs. Henrietta Bartrum, now dead. She also reared an adopted son, Bert Starr of Chariton. She moved with her husband to Iowa from Missouri in 1866, locating near Lacona on a farm and later to Lacona where she had since lived. At the age of 18 she was converted and joined the Baptist church. In 1887 she placed her membership in the Christian church of Lacona. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, the services being conducted by Bro. Thompson of Russell, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Newbern Cemetery.
