Birney C. Hewitt
(August 21, 1873 – September 25, 1946)

Birney C. Hewitt, son of Joseph and Caroline Hewitt, was born Aug. 21, 1873, on a farm south of Indianola. He spent all his life in Warren and Lucas Counties with the exception of three years spent in Missouri. On Aug 14, 1894, he was united in marriage to Florence M. Cole. To this union three children were born: John, who died at the age of 15 in 1912; and Ethel B. Hammer of Des Moines who survives. He had been bedfast for nine weeks. On Sept. 25 he died at his home at the age of 73 years, 1 month and 4 days. His many kindnesses will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He leaves his wife, daughter and two grandchildren, John Birney Hudgens and Dorothy Mae Hammer; three brothers, Eli and Charles of Des Moines, Walter of Sioux City, and one sister, Mrs. Nell Judkins of Des Moines. Three brothers, Will, Fred, Arthur and one sister, Hattie, preceded him in death. He was united with the First Methodist church at Kidder, Mo., where he attended church and later at Browns Chapel and Indianola. Prior to his recent illness he was very interested in local and community affairs, unusually energetic in his farming activities, and was a good neighbor.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J. W. Garbison of Cool and the Rev. O. G. Orcutt of Des Moines at the Orr Funeral Home Saturday, Sept. 28. Interment was in the Indianola Cemetery.
Card of Thanks: We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to our many friends and neighbors who were so kind to us during our recent bereavement and also to thank them for the cards of sympathy and beautiful floral offerings. – Mrs. B. C. Hewitt and Ethel B. Hammer and family
