Elizabeth Pegram, daughter of Josiah and Mary Hanby, was born Dec. 27, 1871, near Summerset. She spent her entire life in Warren County, with the exception of a few years when she lived with her daughter in various parts of Iowa. She was united in marriage Feb. 8, 1894, to J. Norman Pegram of Summerset. They began their married life on a farm. Later, they moved to a farm near Milo, then to Cummings, after which they came to a farm near Carlisle, where they lived 30 years. They then retired and moved to Carlisle, Into their home, four children were born. One daughter, Mary Berniece, died in infancy. A daughter, Maude, Mrs. Arthur Henry of Earlham, and two sons, Ben and Glenn Pegram of Carlisle, survive. She also leaves on son-in-law, the Rev. Arthur Henry of Earlham; two daughters-in-law, Ula and Ruth Pegram of Carlisle; seven grandsons, one granddaughter; one great granddaughter; a number of other relatives and many friends. She was the last member of her family of six sisters and one brother. Mrs. Pegram lost her husband Aug. 2, 1934, at Carlisle, and soon after his death, she moved to Indianola which was her home at the time of her death. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Norman Arthur Henry, Jan. 4, 1924.
She united with the Methodist Church early in life, and has been a member of the Carlisle Methodist Church for more than 40 years. She has been a devoted and ardent church worker. She was president of the Ladies Aid Society for many years, and served as a member of the official board of the church. She was active in the W.C.T.U. and at one time was treasurer of the Warren County organization. She was faithful in attendance at Sunday School and church services and was ever ready to take part in the work of the church. She often expressed her faith in her Lord and her desire to serve Him. She was a good neighbor, ready to help others in time of illness and sorrow. She was a good mother, loving and devoted to her children and grandchildren who will miss her love and interest in their welfare and success, and their many pleasant times together. Mrs. Pegram had been in poor health for the past year, but she had been able to be about, visiting her children. She came from Indianola Thursday afternoon, May 16, to the home of her son, Glenn at Carlisle, with the intention of attending the graduation of her granddaughter, Eileen Pegram, Thursday evening, but while visiting with her son and wife, she was suddenly seized with a heart attack. She had reached the age of 74 years, 4 months and 19 days. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Earl E. Josten, were held Sunday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at the Carlisle Methodist Church. Interment was in the Carlisle Cemetery. Her family, the Rev. and Mrs. Arthur Henry and son, Jaen Henry of Earlham, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Pegram and sons, Gene, Rex and Joe Pegram, their daughters, Miss Eileen Pegram and Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Pegram and son, Norman, all of Carlisle, were present at the services. Two grandsons, LeRoy and Keith Pegram are in the service.
