Mrs. Dorothy Jordan Matthews, 71, of 225 N. Union Ave., Salem, Ohio, wife of W. H. Matthews, prominent Salem, Ohio, orchardist, died of a brain hemorrhage Saturday afternoon, April 6, in Salem City Hospital where she was taken a month ago. She was a former resident of Middle River neighborhood [Warren County, Iowa] and attended Simpson College. Born in Guthrie County, Iowa, April 11, 1874, she was a daughter of David C. and Sophia Wolfe Jordan, pioneers in the days of the settlement of the prairie states. She received her education in the public schools of David City, Neb., where she spent her childhood, and at a college at Gibbons, Neb. She served as state secretary of the Nebraska Daughters of Union Veterans [of the Civil War] for some time. Married in 1897 to William Matthews, she moved to Salem 49 years ago, and until 1923 assisted her husband in the management of two commercial schools: the Salem Business College and Alliance Business College. Active in church and civic affairs, she was a member of several Methodist church groups, the Salem Garden Club and was a past president of the Travelers’ Club.
