Ronald Jay Wilbur
(February 12, 1931 - May 15, 2019)

Ronald Jay Wilbur, 88, of Carlisle passed away peacefully on May 15, 2019, with family and his adopted dog Rizzo at his bedside, Ron was at peace and in comfort until the very end. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, June 1, 2019 at Peterson Funeral Home in Indianola. Burial with Naval military honors will immediately follow the service at I.O.O.F Cemetery in Indianola. A luncheon and gathering will be held at the Peterson Funeral Home immediately following burial.
Ronald was born February 12, 1931 in rural Warren County, Iowa to Cornie and Grace Wilbur. In his childhood days Ron grew up on farms north of Milo and west of Indianola near Center Chapel church. Ron graduated from Indianola High School with the class of 1948.
After high school, Ron left the small town of Indianola and embarked on life of adventure by enlisting in the United States Navy. It was here where Ron learned to swim for the first time. After completing Basic Training and Service School, Ron was assigned to the Cimarron-class fleet replenishment oiler ship, the USS Kaskaskia (AO-27) stationed in San Diego California . Ron was able to get his life of adventure by visiting numerous ports of call and spending over half of his time in the Navy at sea.
After completing his faithful service to his country and fulfilling his need for excitement and adventure, Ron returned to Indianola and began working for R.M Hale Ford & Mercury, which was in the location of the current Indianola Movie Theater. He continued as loyal employee after R.M. Hale became Noble Ford. Ron retired with 60 years of service in the Parts Department at Noble Ford Mercury. Ron was known as a man who wasn't afraid to put in a hard day's work.
On December 12, 1964, Ron was united in marriage to J. Delighte Wilbur. Ron was a devoted and loving husband for over 54 years. During their marriage, Ron and De raised three sons together in Indianola.
Ronald proudly served the American Legion Posts in Milo, Indianola, and most currently Post 391 in Carlisle for 63 years. In his retirement years, Ron found joy in volunteering for Warren County senior citizens by helping at the Carlisle senior meal site.
Ron served his family, his country, and his community faithfully and honorably. He will be missed by many.
Ronald is survived by his wife, J. Delighte Wilbur; sons, Greg (Chris) Wilbur, Jim (Elizabeth) Wilbur, and Joe (Julie) Wilbur, eight grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Janice Wagner.In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Ronald's name to Good Samaritan Society in Indianola.
