Louisa Kate McCune
(January 1, 1858 – November 6, 1923)

Death of Mrs. C. A. McCune
Following an illness of more than a year, Mrs. C. A. McCune, formerly a resident of Indianola, passed away at a hospital in Kansas City, Tuesday, Nov. 6 at 12:30 p.m. The sickness leading to her death has been baffling to the best physicians of Kansas City. At first unable to make any satisfactory diagnosis, they later named the trouble oedema of the brain and predicted six months ago that death was a matter of only a few days. Mrs. McCune was born in Indianola on the first day of the year 1858, the daughter of M. R. and Rachel Barker. She graduated from Simpson College with the class of 1877 and then went to Boone to teach where she met Charles A. McCune, a young merchant, to whom she was married in 1879. They made their home in Boone until 1899, when they moved to Des Moines, where they lived until Mr. McCune’s death in 1915. Following her husband’s death, Mrs. McCune made her home in Indianola for a few years, then returned to Des Moines. She went last fall to the home of her son in Kansas City to spend the winter. An annoying case of enuritis became complicated shortly after her arrival there. She was soon confined to her bed and gradually became weaker until the end came.
Mrs. McCune was well known in Indianola, where her frequent visits at the home of her father and other relatives kept her in close touch with her friends here, even when her home was elsewhere. She was an earnest worker in the Methodist church wherever she was, and was for a time superintendent of the Sunday school at Boone. One of her most marked traits was her loyalty to and enthusiasm for Simpson College. She is survived by her sons, Ralph B. of Kansas City and Russell W. of Chicago, by her mother, Mrs. M. R. Barker, sisters, Mrs. W. H. Berry and two brothers, A. W. and W. W. barker. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon in the Methodist church in Indianola, conducted by her former pastor, Dr. E. M. Evans of Des Moines. Interment in Indianola Cemetery. [Copied from a scrapbook at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
