Martha Leota Mains
(May 5, 1863 – September 19, 1923)

Mrs. W. S. Maine [Mains]
Martha Leota Sophia Myers was born in Wisconsin May 5, 1863. When but two years of age she came with her parents to northern Iowa, later settling in Boone County. She was united in marriage Sept. 20, 1882 to William Mullins, who departed this life March 12, 1889, leaving his wife a widow with three children, one child having died in infancy. The surviving children are Edd and Tom of Carlisle and Mrs. Anna Measley of Norwalk.
Mrs. Mullins was again united in marriage April 28, 1891 to William S. Mains. Four children were born to this union, who with the husband survive her, except one daughter who died in infancy. They are, Mrs. Clara Zook and Charles of Des Moines and James of Denver, Colo. She also leaves one sister, thirteen grandchildren and one great grandchild, also three step-children. Mr. and Mrs. Mains came from Oklahoma to Carlisle in January 1901, where they have since resided. She united with the Christian Church of Carlisle in January 1902, under the pastorate of Rev. C. G. Stout and has always in her quiet and unassuming manner, sought to do the will of her Lord, serving faithfully in the work of her church as long as health permitted. Her kind and cheerful disposition, her willingness to lend a helping hand, made her a devoted wife and mother in the home and has won for her many friends, not only in her church, but in the community in which she has lived. Mrs. Mains has been in poor health for some time, bearing her affliction with great patience, until her spirit took its flight Wednesday evening, Sept. 19, 1923, at the age of 60 years, 4 months and 14 days. Funeral service was held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Christian Church conducted by Rev. E. L. Nickle and the body was laid to rest in the Carlisle Cemetery.
Card of Thanks – We wish to express our thanks to the kind neighbors and friends who assisted us during the illness and death of our dear wife and mother, also for the beautiful flowers with which we were so kindly remembered. – W. S. Mains and family [copied from a scrapbook of newspaper clippings at the Warren County Historical Society Library, Indianola, Iowa]
