The Passing Of A Pioneer Family
The death of Hattie A. Smith Nickle at the age of 82 years and 4 months on Sept. 6, 1923, is next to the last one of a large family of eleven passing away. Sidney and Martha Smith, the parents and nine children settled in Jefferson Township in 1856. The only one of this family remaining is Rev. W. C. Smith of Indianola.
Hattie A. Smith lived with her parents until 1881. Then she married Wesley Nickle and moved on her farm three miles west of Norwalk, which was her home to the last. In the last seven months of her sickness she was well cared for in the home of James and Myrtle Gay in Des Moines. That very painful disease cancer, continued for about fourteen years. She became a widow October 22, 1908. As she had no children, she had to fight the battle, of life alone the last fifteen years of her life. She became a Christian in her girlhood days and was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church and her life, an earnest worker in the Sunday School and church and the Missionary societies of the church. She leaves a host of relatives and friends in the vicinity of Norwalk and Linn Grove where she spent the most of her life.
The funeral services were held on Sept. 8th in the Linn Grove Church conducted by Rev. C. W. Brewer of Norwalk, assisted by Rev. George Wright, her former pastor. The body was then laid to rest in the home cemetery beside her father and family.
