Aged Lacona Resident Dies
William A., son of Joseph and Mary (Applegate) Stewart, was born Jan. 1, 1851, at Youngstown, Ohio, and departed this life Dec 30, 1939, at his home in Lacona, Iowa, aged 88 years, 11 months and 30 days. On March 9, 1886, he was married to Jane Hemphill. To this union three daughters were born, Ethel Downey of Springfield, Mo., Lena Shupe of Lacona, Iowa and Maude, who died in infancy. In 1854 he came with his parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near Indianola where he made his home until 1877. He then made his way to the Black Hills of South Dakota, working in the mills at Deadwood from 1877 until 1883. He then returned to his old home in Iowa, traveling from Deadwood to Perre by stage. Upon his return to Iowa he purchased the farm he now owned in White Breast Township where they made their home until 1920 when they moved to Lacona. He was a loving husband, devoted father and a splendid neighbor. During his long residence here of nearly 89 years he had won a large circle of friends who will mourn his passing. His sickness was of short duration. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, two daughters, two grandchildren. Luthere and Darl Shupe, one brother, A. H. Shupe of Springfield, Mo., a host of relatives and friends. Four brothers and six sisters preceded him in death.
A precious one from us has gone, a voice we loved is stilled; a place is vacant in our home, which never can be filled. God in His wisdom has recalled the boon His love had given; and though the body slumbers now, the soul is safe in Heaven.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Glen Lamb from the home New Years’ day. Interment was in the Liberty Center cemetery.
Card of Thanks – We wish to express our sincere appreciation to our friends for their kindness and sympathy. Also for the floral gifts and the ones helping with the music at the time of the death of our husband and father. – Mrs. Jennie Stewart, Mr. and Mrs. Lauren Downey, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Shupe and family.
