Obituary – Mrs. Mary E. Shupe
The history of Mrs. Mary E. Shupe’s life was written by her Nov. 5, 1927, to be used as a part of her obituary and is as follows:
Mary E. Morris, daughter of Mercer and Elizabeth Morris, was born near Spencer, Own County, Ind., Jan 31, 1852. She was the fifth child in a family of 11 children, four boys and seven girls. Her parents came to Iowa when she was three years old and lived on a farm near Cool. She united with the Baptist church at the age of 15 years. She spent her young life near Cool and was united in marriage to William C. Smith, Oct 28, 1869. To this union five children were born - four daughters and one son. They are: Mrs. Eva Fogle, Mrs. Elma Stokesbury, Mrs. Alma Rodgers, Albert M. Smith and Mrs. Jennie Clevenger. Her husband united with her in the Baptist church in 1873 and died Oct 4, 1881, having been a Civil War veteran, Co. D, 63rd Ohio regiment.
On Feb. 25, 1883, she was united in marriage to A. D. Shupe. To this union two daughters were born: Mrs. Lottie Simmons and Verna Shupe. Lottie Simmons died Feb 12, 1917. Her father preceded her in death in 1916. Lottie left two sons, Merlyn and Vaughn Simmons, who made their home with their grandmother since the death of their mother. Mary E. Shupe, after moving to Lacona, united with the Methodist church many years ago and was a regular attendant of both Sunday school and church until about two years ago, her health began to fail. She departed this life Feb 15, 1939, at the age of 87 years and 15 days. Four of her seven children preceded her in death, Mrs. Jennie Clevenger, Mrs. Lottie Simmons, Mrs. Eva Fogle and Albert Mercer Smith. Three daughters remain to mourn their loss, Mrs. Alma Rodgers, Mrs. Elma Stokesbury and Verna Irene Shupe. She had 16 grandchildren, all living except one: seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Butler of Indianola and Mrs. Anne Pierce of Egan, S. D.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 17, at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. Glen Lamb. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette composed of Charles Thomason, Charles Myers, Mrs. Swanson and Mrs. Gerald Butler, with Miss Beatrice Shupe at the piano. The floral offerings were beautiful. The pallbearers were her grandsons, Creslie, Wayne, and Frank Rodgers, G. F. Haltom, Gerald Nyswonger and William Lammars. Interment was in the Shaver Cemetery five miles south of Indianola.
