LEATHA HARBAUGH HANSEN
Memorial services for Leatha Harbaugh Hansen, 91, who passed away Thursday, December 5, 2019, at The Village in Indianola, will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, December 14 in The Heritage Room at The Village in Indianola. Cremains will be placed at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
Leatha was born to John and Grace Harbaugh on January 2, 1928 in Kansas City, KS. Her early years were spent in Kansas City where her father was a Baptist minister. The family moved to Sedan, KS and then to Tekamah, NE, where Leatha graduated from Tekamah High School and then Wayne State University in Wayne, NE, with a degree in music education.
Leatha started her teaching career in Tekamah and then moved to Hartington, NE where she taught K-12 vocal music. It was at Hartington where she met her future husband, William Hansen, a fellow teacher. They were married on June 15, 1952 and to this union two sons, John and David, were born. The family moved to Shelby, IA in 1954 where both Leatha and Bill continued their teaching careers in Shelby and Moville, IA. Leatha finished her career at the Ames High School, Ames, IA in the special education department and retired in 1990, after forty years in education.
Leatha is survived by her husband, William Hansen, of 67 years who resides at The Village in Indianola, IA; sons, John (Karla) Hansen of Indianola, IA and David (Joyce) Hansen of Ankeny, IA; five grandchildren, Adam (Megan Thompson) Hansen of Des Moines, IA, Grant (Victoria) Hansen of Glendale, CA, Amy Hansen of West Des Moines, IA, Taylor (Jocelyn) Hansen of Denton, TX and Seth (Natasha) Hansen of Ankeny, IA.
Memorials may be given in Leatha’s name to the Good Shepherd Endowment Fund at The Village.
